A trip to Macau definitely wouldn’t be complete without a day tour to Zhuhai in mainland China, where the lure of endless shopping got all the women in the family excited. A thing or two that the Singaporean Tourism Board could learn from Macau, was the fact that all hotels offered complimentary shuttle services to major landmarks across the Island. sweetened by the fact that the buses were very frequent and efficient, operating on a basis of every 10-15 minutes. That aside, the queue to enter mainland china was horrendously long as we waited and waited until it was finally our turn to clear the customs. One juvenile mistake we made after clearing the customs was the fact that we overlooked the underground shopping mall and instead ventured outward for a good few hours to no avail. But sometimes, wandering around aimlessly can turn out to be a blessing in disguise, considering the fact that I wouldn’t have chanced upon this random local stall selling one of the best roasted meats i have ever had in my life!
Steamed White Chicken
I learn from a quick conversation with a few locals that the cold steamed white chicken was a local signature speciality of Zhuhai, where they highly recommended us to try it! The dish however failed to find favor as it turned out really ordinary. Infused with a pungent aroma of sesame oil, most parts of the tender chicken meat rendered on the bloody side, while serving it cold may have somewhat killed the overall flavor profile of this highly sought after dish.
This had got to be the best char siew I have ever had in my life! Each and ever sliver of meat had a substantial amount of fat was melt in your mouth tender and generously coated with a sweet barbecued glaze and a wonderfully charred flavor. Words and pictures really do not do justice how good this char siew that the parentals who are pretty health conscious even opted for seconds. Even the char siew served at Yung Kee definitely paled in comparison with the one here, period
Roasted Goose in Plum Sauce
The roast goose possessed a divine crackling skin, embodied by chunks of tender and juicy meat below, drenched in a thick and velvety plum sauce with added a delightful sweet contrast.
Stir Fried Vegetables
Apart from the artery clogging roasted meats, vegetables were deemed as necessary to conclude a balanced diet. The stir fried vegetables showcased simplicity at its best with clean and fresh flavors. The best part? The entire cost of the fulfilling lunch added up to be around $3 per peson, definitely a steal considering the sheer variety of meats we sampled.
